Deets: Thirty years ago, a group of gifted young pianists with a bent towards new music, gathered together to lick stamps. Led by the late pianist, scholar and Schoenberg associate Leonard Stein, they sat at his dining table affixing these stamps to pre-internet postcards to announce their brand-new concert series called Piano Spheres. They hoped it might last a whole season. Music patron Betty Freeman wrote the $2,500 check that was their budget for the entire year. Now, 30 years and a few generations later, these pianists - Gloria Cheng, Vicki Ray, Mark Robson, and the late Susan Svrček have become brilliant lights in the firmament of contemporary concert music in Los Angeles and are bringing the next generation of young pianists along with them.

To celebrate this landmark 30th anniversary season, Piano Spheres presents ‘30 for 30,’ a special initiative that will commission 30 composers to write new works for the piano, to be performed by Piano Spheres’ Core Artists: Nic Gerpe, Aron Kallay, Thomas Kotcheff and Vicki Ray, Emeritus Artist Mark Robson, Stein Resident Artist Andrés Jaramillo, and Emerging Artist Thomas Mellan. All ‘30 for 30’ composers were chosen by the performers and represent an impressive sampling of local, national and international talent including Thomas Meadowcroft, Donald Crockett, Paul Beaudoin, Paul Morovec, Veronika Krausas, William Alves, Thomas Flaherty and 23 others. Guest Artist Stephen Drury will present a solo recital featuring the complete piano sonatas of Charles Ives on the 150th anniversary of his birth. Also performing will be Emerita Artist Gloria Cheng with guest pianist Ralph van Raat in a program celebrating the 100th birthday of Pierre Boulez in association with CAP UCLA.

Piano Spheres dedicates its 2024/25 season to beloved core artist Sarah Gibson and will honor her memory with a special concert on July 14th, the anniversary of her tragic passing. Gibson’s duo HOCKET with pianist Thomas Kotcheff remains on sabbatical.

October 22, 2024 | Thayer Hall, Colburn School

Charles Ives at 150: World renowned guest artist Stephen Drury will celebrate the Ives sesquicentennial with a special performance of Ives’ complete sonatas for piano, including the monumental “Concord” sonata.

November 9, 2024 | at Zipper Hall, Colburn School

Spielfreude: “Spielfreude”, the joy of playing, describes the sheer physical and emotive pleasure of performing. Music by Ligeti, Glass, Cowell, Messiaen, Schoenberg, Aldo Clementi, Ginastera and three 30 for 30 composers

December 9, 2024 | at Zipper Hall, Colburn School

For Susan and Rick: Pianists Gloria Cheng, Nic Gerpe, Aron Kallay, Thomas Kotcheff, Nelson Ojeda, Vicki Ray and Mark Robson honor Piano Spheres’ founding pianist Susan Svrcek and her composer-husband Frederick Lesemann.

January 21, 2025 | at Thayer Hall, Colburn School

A Journey of Immigrants: Colombian pianist Andrés Jaramillo specializes in the music of living LatinX composers. He will explore the myriad emotions inherent in the immigrant experience through the music of his ’30 for 30’ composers.

February 18, 2025 | at Thayer Hall, Colburn School

Brook and Meadowcroft: This concert features two new large-scale works by important international composers Taylor Brook and Thomas Meadowcroft. Both are 30 for 30 composers.

March 11, 2025 | at Thayer Hall, Colburn School

Islands: Piano Spheres’ newest Core Artist Nic Gerpe will present a range of colorful and evocative pieces which explore the many aspects and connotations of islands. Music by Donnacha Dennehy, Salina Fisher and Christopher Cerrone, with ’30 for 30’ pieces by Robert Pollock, José-Luis Hurtado and Paul Moravec.

March 26, 2025 | at Thayer Hall, Colburn School

Collective Hysteria: The Three Piano Sonatas of Pierre Boulez. Emerging Artist Thomas Mellon presents the complete piano sonatas of Pierre Boulez. Premieres of 30 for 30 pieces by organist/composer Rashaan Allwood, underground death metal legend Colin Marston and Ukrainian virtuoso violinist Orest Smovzh

April 15, 2025 | at Thayer Hall, Colburn School

Love/Dream: Aron Kallay wants an update to Franz Liszt’s Liebestraum No. 3. ’30 for 30’ composers Michael Frazier, Brandon Rolle, Zanaida Robles, Daniel Allas and Marek Zebrowski use Liebestraum as a point of departure, creating new work on what it means to love, to dream.

May 30, 2025 | at The Leonard Nimoy Theater

Celebrating Pierre Boulez: Pianists Gloria Cheng and Ralph van Raat pay homage to Pierre Boulez’s legacy in his centennial year with music by Boulez, Cage, Feldman, Gibson, Lindburg, Stravinsky and Zappa. Produced in association with CAP UCLA.

July 14, 2025 | at Zipper Hall

For Sarah: Piano Spheres’ Core and Emeritus Artists. Sarah Gibson was a brilliant pianist, composer and educator, and one of the brightest lights in our community. Along with pianist Thomas Kotcheff, she was half of the piano duo HOCKET, who joined Piano Spheres as a Core Artist in 2019. Join the Piano Spheres family as we honor her legacy on the anniversary of her passing.

Deets: Rust-Oleum celebrated the inaugural debut by hosting a high-energy evening featuring industry legend, Persue, and rising talent, George F Baker III. The two artists partnered with Rust-O to bring the new line to life, painting it out on the canvas in a thrilling head-to-head spray paint battle at the Secret Walls headquarters in downtown Los Angeles. With only 90 minutes to ideate and complete their piece, the artists faced-off against each other (Persue with artist Emily Ding and George F Baker III with artist Allison Bamcat) in a frantic adrenaline rush energized by the cheers of the crowd. A decibel meter measuring audience reaction — helped to determine the winners of the night: George F Baker III and Allison Bamcat. All of this action was hosted by Nick Major.

Beyond the battle, attendees enjoyed exclusive access to try the new Rust-O spray paint, along with limited-edition merchandise giveaways. The celebration was more than just a launch—it’s a tribute to the art community and a preview of the future for Rust-Oleum’s commitment to creatives and the industry.

When: Sunday - Wednesday 4:00 PM - 12:00 AM
Thursday - Saturday 4:00 PM - 2:00 AM

Deets: The West Hollywood EDITION is pleased to announce that creator, home-chef, and famously doting husband, Desmond Scott has created a limited-run menu, inspired by his passion for cooking for loved ones. Blending sophistication with the soul of a home-cooked meal, the menu incorporates Desmond’s Texas roots with the California backdrop to create a rounded selection, which will be available at the Lobby Bar for the month of March.

Centered on flavor, nostalgia, and connection, the menu will feature:

Savory Monkey Bread - Whipped honey butter, bacon jalapeño jam

There’s nothing like a nice warm pillowy bread to accompany your favorite bar side drinks! My savory take on traditional dessert monkey bread pairs whipped honey butter and bacon jam with a kick, which can be applied one at a time or both for an amazing bite.

Brisket Burnt End Bao Buns - Gochujang barbeque sauce, pickled onions, cilantro fried garlic

As a Texas Native I’m biased on finding the best barbecue and there’s no such thing as Texas BBQ without brisket! Texas BBQ meets Chinese steamed bun in this brisket bao creation! I love merging the concepts of two cultures and this dish creates a fun twist on two traditional items.

Hamachi Crudo - Grapefruit, serrano chilies

Nothing says California to me like fresh and masterfully prepared fish. I wanted to add something refreshing and light to the menu and this Hamachi Crudo perfectly balances the acidity of grapefruit, salty caviar, and olive oil for a luxurious mouthfeel.

Tie The Knot (Cocktail) - Tequila, white cherry syrup, coconut cream, fresh lime juice

Upon arriving at The Holiday Village, you’ll spot Santa’s signature carriage - carrying Christmas wishes to the North Pole - where you will be welcomed with the warmest season’s greetings by merry-making elves. They’ll orient you at the Navigation Station with good tidings and joy before visiting with Mrs. Claus at her bakery. Once she’s filled you up with Christmas cheer, it’s time to meet Santa in his very own bungalow. Inside those cozy storybook quarters, help him with his upcoming flight by sharing what you learned at the Navigation Station, discover how Christmas wishes are delivered, and uncover the holiday magic that powers his legendary night.

Just outside of the bungalow, Santa’s helpers invite you to embark on a seasonal scavenger hunt extending beyond his backyard and into The Holiday Village. You’ll track and decipher symbols of the season while carrying out a very merry mission to keep Christmas cheer on course. You’ll return to Santa’s carriage to send holiday spirit soaring to new heights!

Deets: Southern California’s largest winter festival, returns to Costa Mesa for its 10th anniversary on select dates from November 22 through January 5. Winter Fest OC promises fun for all ages, transforming OC Fair and Event Center into a winter wonderland with massive holiday decor, thrilling snow and ice activities, immersive experiences, carnival rides and games, and an all-new holiday light show featuring more than 2 million lights with synchronized music. Home of the region’s largest outdoor ice skating rink, an 8,000-square-foot real snow play area, and a 150-foot ice tubing slide, Winter Fest OC brings a snowy paradise to Southern California.

This year, guests can experience more thrills with an expanded carnival, including an all-new dedicated kids carnival. Guests can expect both favorite and new rides, including Turbo Speed, where riders are taken for a 70mph “spin” that takes them 120 feet in the air; Hawaiian Express, a ride reminiscent of riding the waves of Hawaii, putting guests on an up-down-around trip faster and faster, then backwards too; the Inversion, featuring a tripod holding a total of 12 guests with the main arm of the ride swinging side to side like a pendulum, then swings to invert guests completely around and upside down at heights of 80 feet. All this plus the Giant Wheel, where guests will have jaw-dropping views of the lights from nearly 100 feet above Winter Fest OC, and so many more.
